Study Task 5

I intend to investigate the works of Japanese 'shunga' and its historical context alongside other motifs familiar with the art form. I want to highlight why shunga was a unique practise and eliminate any taboos surrounding porn vs erotic art. The research I have done into the visual narratives have provided me with certain motifs to include in my practical work such as, narrative, dialogue, distortion of the human form, situational imagery and above all, humour.

I plan on starting my work by using a sketchbook to test various facial expressions as I believe these will be important to portraying humour specifically and study how I can warp human anatomy. I will also draft some notes on dialogue and short narrative. I then want to produce a painting in gouache (but not limited to) on large scale. I envision it as a poster or as a stand alone image in its own right. I could potentially produce a zine of some of the images in my sketchbook also but I will see how much time I have as painting can be consuming.
